Cheeseburger Sandwiches
This could also be made with a thick sloppy joe sauce. I have also made with is ham and cheese. Just a simple, quick and hearty meal. Serve with french fries, fruit, etc.
- 2 Tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup shortening or softened butter
- 1 whole egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3-1/2-4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1-1/2 pound ground beef or ground turkey
- 1/2 medium onion, diced
- 1 8oz. can tomato sauce (or use sloppy joe sauce)
- 8 slices American cheese quartered (have also used cheddar)
In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let dissolve, then add luke warm milk and sugar. Stir. Let sit for a bit while yeast foams. Then add the shortening, egg, salt and 2 cups flour. Mix until smooth. Mix in remaining flour until dough becomes soft and elastic. Knead for about 6 minutes. Let dough rise until double. While dough is rising, prepare hamburger mixture.
Brown hamburger with onion. Salt and pepper as desired. Add the tomato sauce (or sloppy joe sauce). Warm and set aside.
When dough has doubled (about 30 minutes), punch down and divide into 16 pieces. I like to use my dough cutter for this. Works out perfect. Roll out each ball on a greased surface to make a circle about 5 inches across.
Scoop out about 3 or 4 Tablespoons of the meat mixture into the circle of dough. I love to use my large cookie scoop for this. Then, place two of the quartered pieces of cheese on top. Bring up all sides of the dough and pinch together to make a seal. Place buns, seam side down, on a greased cookie sheet. Let rise until doubled in warm area.
Preheat oven to 400*. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown on top. May brush with melted butter if desired. Serve warm .
