Grandma Jeanne's Homemade White Bread

I have always loved the taste of homemade bread right out of the oven. My favorite is to take it out of the oven, slice myself a big ol piece and smother it with butter….and sometimes some homemade strawberry jam. I love this recipe from my step-mom, Jeanne. I have made this bread more times than I can count. Enjoy!

  • 2 cups milk (scalded, then cooled to room temperature)
  • 3 Tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 4-6 cups white flour
  • 1 Tablespoon yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  1. Scald milk and add the shortening while warm. Let cool. In a mixing bowl, combine the water, yeast and sugar. Allow to foam. Add the milk and shortening. Mix. Add the salt and flour. Knead for about 5-8 minutes in electric mixer. Cover and let rise for about 45 minutes to an hour, until double in size.

  2. Punch down. Divide dough in two. Mold into rolls and place in greased bread pans. Let rise until double. Bake in 400 degree oven for 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 350 degrees for last 15 minutes. Hint: I like to cover mine with tinfoil for the second half to keep from burning the tops. Enjoy!
